HAZLETON -- A special ceremony was held to honor fallen law enforcement officers and thank current officers for their service.

The sound of bagpipes were just part of the service held on the steps of city hall Thursday afternoon.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane joined lawmakers and law enforcement officers from numerous agencies. They paid tribute to officers killed in the line of duty.

Today was also about honoring officer achievements, especially a recent drug operation between police and the attorney general's office called Operation Rising Star.

"It's important that we make sure our police officers are safe and appreciated in the community. Events like this bring everyone together and it's so important fo us as law enforcement to honor these men and women," Kane said.

A special tribute was also paid to the family of the only Hazleton officer killed in the line of duty, Ernesto Valente.
