TANNERSVILLE – Northampton Community College’s new Monroe Campus in Tannersville is just about a month away from being move-in ready.
It’s five times the size of the school’s current campus just down the road. It has plenty of new amenities and room for thousands of students.
"I'm excited because it's a lot bigger than this. We joke about how this is basically one hallway, which it really is,” said Nathalie Vega of Tobyhanna.
"It's a lot more to study, everything like that. Student life center, gymnasium, bigger cafeteria,” said Patrick Nolen of Reeders.
Students wrapping up finals at the old building say they feel the sky’s the limit at the new campus. College officials say new non-credit programs such as truck driving and cooking have really stirred up some excitement.
Crews are working to finish up some detail work inside, but from the outside, the $72 million project looks almost complete.
Of course, the college says it has a few loose ends to tie up before they can officially move in. For instance, some lamp posts belong in the parking lot, but they say they'll have everything done in time for classes to start mid-July.
Dean Matt Connell says the only thing more exciting than the new home are the new programs offered to students.
"We are going to be offering electronics technology and related areas such as computer science that will give individuals in this high-tech world the skills they need to get jobs in the technology fields,” said Northampton Community College Monroe Campus Dean Matt Connell.
Northampton Community College says, with this addition, students will be prepared for more jobs at home like at the Tobyhanna Army Depot.
It’s attracting students such as Ana Salvo, a mom from Kunkletown.
"Now we have more programs, which makes it easier for people like me because I can't travel that far,” said Salvo.
Northampton Community College says it has room to build two more buildings on this new campus in Tannersville and plans to grow even more down the road.
