SCHUYLKILL HAVEN -- How's this for a strange coincidence? A vehicle that belongs to a car repair shop in Schuylkill County was among a dozen vehicles that vandals damaged overnight. Plus, the business caught the crooks on camera.
It was 2:17a.m. Tuesday when a surveillance camera at Jack's Auto Supply on West Main Street in Schuylkill Haven recorded the video. You can see two men going from car to car, slashing tires with a knife, some repeatedly.
""I don't know what they get out of it. What would you get out of stabbing tires?" asked Jack, who owns Jack's Auto Supply.
Jack owns Jack's Auto Supply. He says some friends told him their car tires had been slashed. That's when he checked his surveillance tape and called police.
Police say two men slashed 17 tires on 13 cars on the west side of Schuylkill Haven.
"I don't think you could ever specifically identify a purpose other than it's mindless and a lack of morals," said Schuylkill Haven Police Chief Jeff Walcott.
For most of the people who got their tires slashed, it just affected their ability to get around town, but because Jack's wrecker is used for work, it also affected his job.
"Even today, you said that some of the other victims needed to be towed and fixed up, right?"
"Yes, I have to pick one up yet today, bring it here," said Jack.
Another woman, who did not want to be identified, had her and her husband's car tires slashed, costing about $300 per tire. She believes she also saw the vandals when she was walking home from work early in the morning.
"Now I have a fear of coming home in the dark, and if someone is that bold to come on the property, slice both tires, what else would they do?"
