ELYSBURG -- A sign of summer in our area is almost here: Knoebels Amusement Resort opens this weekend in Northumberland County.

Knoebels was a beehive of activity Thursday as workers got the park ready for opening weekend.

Knoebels opens this weekend and spokesperson Joe Muscato says there is still a lot to do.

Employees tested rides and washed every inch of the amusement park.

"Every bench, every ride, every wall of every building, so we're getting everything all shined up," Muscato said.

Most of the park's 60 rides will be open this weekend, including the water rides, the Phoenix and all the rest.

It's pretty safe to say the highlight of 2014 is going to be the ride that's been about seven and half years in the making and Knoebels says it's the only one like it in the world: The Flying Turns.

"This is the one and only authentic Flying Turns anywhere.  There are some steel and fiberglass versions that are kind of similar but this is a unique experience," said Muscato.

The Flying Turns opened last year for 12 days but Muscato says this year the ride will be open full time.  Muscato says Knoebels recently won some awards from the National Amusement Park Historical Association, including best amusement park.

Many people in our area agree.

"It's so exciting that it's finally opening.  It's a sign of good weather, and like they say, it's food, family and fun," said Kayla Kratzer of Freeburg.

"It means summer is here.  My grandkids are excited!" said Nancy Swank.

Knoebels Amusement Resort opens this weekend from noon until 6 p.m.

The park is only open weekends until right before Memorial Day, then it opens seven days a week.
