KIDDER TOWNSHIP -- A day on the water turned deadly for one fisherman in Carbon County.

Rescue crews pulled the body of a man from the Lehigh River Thursday evening after he fell into the water.

Fire and rescue crews were in the Lehigh River after 5 p.m. Thursday after a man called 911 saying the friend he was fishing with fell into the water here in Carbon County.

The Kidder Township Fire Chief says crews from both Carbon and Luzerne Counties searched the river for hours and recovered the body of the fisherman about a half a mile from where he went in.

The fire chief says it's not known at this time what caused the man to fall into the water but says his death does not appear suspicious.

“I don't think so, the guy who called 911 and reported it. They were both out fishing all day and it was just a new spot. They're not familiar with this area and he wanted to try another spot and he wasn't familiar and the river's tricky up here, especially this time of year. With the rain we had, it's running fast and there's some pretty deep holes,” said Chief Bill Bresnak.
