ORWIGSBURG -- There were nearly 9,000 entries for a nationwide contest and a fourth grader from Schuylkill County won the grand prize.
The girl had the honor of writing the end of a storybook.
Kayla March, age 9, is described as a good student at Blue Mountain Elementary East in Orwigsburg.
She's also very creative. The fourth grader entered a nationwide contest to finish a children's storybook.
The tale involved two cartoon characters who were on a banana-shaped spaceship. It was attacked by a space monster.
That's where Kayla picked up the story. She wrote an ending, complete with pictures.
"Molly got out her bacon gun and started shooting it at the monster and cocoa puff put a binky in its month, so it fell asleep," Kayla said. "And Molly was a superhero after all."
Out of nearly 9,000 entries from elementary students all over the country, the publishers picked Kayla as the grand prize winner.
For her efforts she received several things including $300 worth of books.
"I still get goose bumps. I think it's awesome!" said Kayla's mother Lisa march. "I couldn't believe it when she first told me she's the grand prize winner and when I read it I was just freaking out. We had a big celebration at home and it was really cool!"
"Kayla is very creative. She often thinks outside of the box which is something I strive in my classroom. She'll often take a concept and broaden it in her own creativity and she did a great job at this," said Kayla's teacher Amy Krick.
Kayla's accomplishment will be recognized at a school board meeting this week and at an art show on April 30 at Blue Mountain Elementary East.
