HUGHESVILLE -- A high school chorus group in Lycoming County has more than doubled its membership in the past year. The Hughesville High School Spartan Chorus will celebrate later this week by performing at the Statue of Liberty.

On Wednesday, the group will be performing in New York Harbor in front of the Statue of Liberty.

"We'll take the ferry ride from Battery Park to Liberty Island and sitting at the base of the Statue of Liberty is very cool," Choral Director Brian Barckley said.

Choral Director Brian Barckley says this performance is possible thanks to renewed interest in the school's music program.

The Hughesville High School Chorus has grown tremendously over the past year. Last year there were only 18 members in the group and this year there are 52.

"I promised some of the members in our group if they could recruit some students it would be worth it just for the music sake, the education and just singing together," Barkley said.

"Last year and this year has really been picking up a lot. We've started doing special numbers with bands and stuff which really brings people to it," Benjamin Nesselrodt said.

Tonee Mitchell says the students have worked hard to perfect the ten songs they plan to sing, but that's not all.

"We're going to be going to see Aladdin on Broadway and then we're going to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner and then we'll just be able to explore times square for a little bit," Tonee Mitchell said.

Barckley says he hopes enrollment numbers continue to increase. Next year the group plans to travel to Cedar Point as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Barckley says this week's performance will be streamed live on the district's website so parents can watch.
