POINT TOWNSHIP -- A portion of Route 147 was closed for most of the day Thursday after a tractor trailer carrying bottles of bleach rolled over around 4:30 a.m.
"I just heard the crash. I thought it was the trains because that's what you hear all the time." said Robert Aucker, Point Township.
Police said the truck was headed southbound when it veered off the road and hit a tree. Police believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel. He was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. It took emergency responders several hours to remove the man from the truck. People watching crews clean up at the scene were shocked to hear that the man was doing well.
“I'd say he's lucky. If he's alive he's lucky," said Edmond Woodward of Point Township.
The road was blocked for most of the day, causing headaches for drivers.
“It is (a headache) for a lot of people. The local people, they know how to get around, but the people from out of town, they don't know how to get around." said Aucker.
Some drivers Newswatch 16 spoke with said the detour was confusing.
“If I got some signs from highway I-80 about this accident, I could have turned around. Now I have to stay here." said Alexander Britov, a truck driver from Ontario.
All lanes of the road were reopened by 3:30 p.m.
