MONROE COUNTY---Golf bridge construction is underway across the waterway at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Smithfield Township.
"It's like putting together a big jigsaw puzzle. Everything is numbered and labeled. And as long as we don't have to replace too many pieces through maintenance, it goes right back together," said Steve Taggart, Director of Golf.
A barge, with an old fashioned pulley system, held men below, while others walked a thin line and screwed together the many moving parts.
The project marks a sure sign of spring in Monroe County and connects golfers to 24 holes on an island.
"It's different, it's been going on since the early 1900's and we'll probably continue on with it I'm sure," said Taggart.
Once all the pieces of the 300 foot golf bridge are together, the golf season can finally start.
"Aim for April 1st, and hope to be open a few days before that, but this year as you know today is April 1st and this is where we are," said Rob Howell, manager of the resort.
Golfers like Jeremy Tintle of Lake Wallenpaupack said his patience is wearing thin.
"I'm chipping golf balls around in my backyard right now. Excited to get outside. It has been a long season but the sun's out today, it looks like we're close to being able to start."
With any luck, golfers can tee-off at Shawnee in just another day or two.
