WEST PITTSTON -- When you check out a book at the library in West Pittston, you get something a little extra free.

Obviously when you think of a library, you think of the books and at the West Pittston Library they have the shelves stacked with plenty of those to help your mind grow.

But now you can also check out packets of seeds to grow a lot more at home.

"It's so simple, the seed packets are treated just like a library book. They're bar coded. You can check out up to three," explained Jen Moran at the West Pittston Library.

A big question is do you have to return the seeds?

The answer is yes, sort of.

"People are going to have no problem checking out these seed packets, growing great food, and then at the end of the season, we ask then to harvest the seeds, which we'll have information, and they just bring them back," Moran said.

There's a whole display set up with gardening and growing information, and of course books, that will help with the process, including drying out some seeds at the end of the season.

"It takes a little bit of work, but it's totally worth the effort because you can't beat fresh-tasting food," said library director Anne Bramblett-Barr.

The seeds were all donated and a way to show you can get a lot out of a library. Now a library card can help get you a green thumb.

"It's great for someone who's never done it before, great for kids to show kids how to grow their own food," said Bramblett-Barr.

With the weather we've been having, it's a little hard to think about going home and planting anything right now, but it is about the time to start planting some seeds inside and those at the library can't wait to hear how the growing is going.
