WILKES-BARRE — The Sherman Hills housing complex in Wilkes-Barre is getting a new owner.

Sherman Hills has been under intense scrutiny over the last year after several shootings and other crimes.

This information came in late Thursday afternoon from the Sherman Hills task force.

The troubled low-income housing complex owned by a company in Brooklyn is expected to be sold to a company in New Jersey next month.

Sherman Hills in Wilkes-Barre has been the scene of several shootings and drug busts in recent months.

The task force says that the prospective new owner – Treetop Development from New Jersey – will follow through with plans to build a fence around the property with 24-hour security and new surveillance cameras.

This all comes after a scathing report by federal housing officials last year that said safety conditions at the complex were life threatening.

The task force says the federal government paid $1.7 million last year in housing subsidies for most of the residents in the 344-unit property.
