EDWARDSVILLE -- Two abandoned dogs rescued by a McDonald's employee Wednesday morning are doing well.
Police in Luzerne County are working to find out who the neglectful dog owners are.
The dogs are safe and should soon be ready for adoption from the Luzerne County SPCA.
Outside Petco in Edwardsville just before dawn, loud, lonely barks were coming from two pups abandoned and chained to a pole outside.
But they didn't stay there for long thanks to Chris Adamson, an employee from the nearby McDonald's.
"We were actually taking garbage out and we heard barking and there was two dogs jumping around. They were just in bad condition."
Adamson gave the dogs some water and called 911.
With no tags or identification, Edwardsville police unchained the dogs and took them to the Luzerne County SPCA.
We checked in with them a few hours later when they were as happy and energetic as could be.
"They seemed very healthy, very happy dogs, very friendly dogs. We examined them. Of course, we gave them all of the immunizations we do every animal that comes in our door," said Luzerne County SPCA worker Peggy Nork.
The dogs are male and SPCA workers believe they are brothers, just about a year old.
SPCA officials say they need to be neutered but are otherwise in good condition.
Police say they want to find the owner and see if there's a good explanation for what happened. Otherwise, the owner could face animal cruelty charges.
Unless they're reunited with the owner, the SPCA hopes to have the dogs available for adoption within a week.
"If we can get them a good home together, that'd be fabulous. But if not, they'll get two good homes," Nork said.
Chris Adamson says he's just happy he was able to help.
"It makes me feel good, but also disgusted at the same time that somebody could chain their dogs up like that and just leave them in the middle of a public place."
