WILKES-BARRE -- A man admitted in court that he killed a boy in a hit and run crash in Luzerne County.

That guilty plea in the hit and run death of a 5 year old comes one week before the case was scheduled to go to trial.

Thomas Letteer admitted in court that he was behind the wheel of the car that hit and killed Kevin Miller.

This guilty plea comes more than a year after the 5 year old was killed when leaving a Christmas party with his family in Wilkes-Barre.

Thomas Letteer, 23, from Plains Township tried ignoring the cameras and questions as he walked into the Luzerne County Courthouse with his family Monday afternoon.

He pleaded guilty and agreed to a charge of accidents involving personal injury or death.

He also agreed to pay $27,000 to cover the cost of the investigation and prosecution.

But there is no deal on jail time.

The judge said Letteer could be sentenced up to 10 years in state prison.

Kevin Miller, age 5, was killed just days before Christmas in 2012 on West North Street in Wilkes-Barre.

The car Letteer was driving belonged to his father.  Police found it a month later after an extensive search throughout the Wyoming Valley.

Kevin Miller's family is suing Letteer and his father in civil court. They want damages of more than $50,000 for the traumatic loss of their son.

There is a gag order in this case so no one can talk about the guilty plea until after sentencing  which is scheduled for May 1.

Letteer remains free on bail.
