Longtime Lackawanna County Pastor Dies

OLYPHANT — A beloved priest at a Ukrainian Catholic parish in Lackawanna County has died.

Msgr. Stephen Hrynuck served as pastor at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church in Olyphant for more than 50 years before retiring in 2008.

Parish officials said Msgr. Hrynuck died Thursday.

He continued to celebrate weekly novenas at the church until 2012.

A viewing for Msgr. Hrynuck will be held Monday from noon to 8 p.m. at Ss. Cyril and Methodius on River Street in Olyphant. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Ss. Cyril and Methodius on River Street in Olyphant.

Following the funeral, Divine Liturgy will be at Ss. Cyril’s and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery at the 300 block of Gino Meril Drive in Peckville, PA.

All are invited to attend the viewing and the Divine Liturgy.

Msgr. Hrynuck was 102 years old.
