March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month and with it, C.A.S.U.A.L. Day, which stands for 'colon cancer awareness saves unlimited adult lives.' Here's the focus of the campaign.
Call it a way to reunite a workforce! C.A.S.U.A.L. Day celebrates its 11th year in our area. Benefiting the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, it's an event when dressing down at work could help save the life of someone you know.
The Cancer Institute uses the funds from C.A.S.U.A.L. Day to raise awareness about the potentially deadly disease and support colorectal cancer screenings for people who might want to be checked but can't afford it.
Take a look at these numbers: according to the Centers for Disease Control, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in America. Those most at risk: people 50 years of age or older. But you should ask your doctor about being screened sooner if you have a family history or are living with some of these conditions. All could put you in a higher risk category.
And if you haven't experienced any of these things but you're a smoker, a 2014 report just out from the surgeon general concluded that smoking causes colorectal cancer.
