The United States Supreme Court will not hear two big court cases that originated in our area, meaning both rulings will stand.

First, the high court announced Monday it will not hear the appeal filed by former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella.

Ciavarella was convicted in the so-called “Kids for Cash” scandal. He was accused of taking kickbacks in exchange for keeping a juvenile detention center filled.

The Supreme Court also will not hear an appeal made by the city of Hazleton.

It concerned a controversial city ordinance to combat illegal immigration.

That ordinance included penalties for landlords and employers in Hazleton if they rented to or employed illegal immigrants.

The ordinance was later declared unconstitutional and Monday’s court action means that ruling will stand.
