KIDDER TOWNSHIP -- When it comes to weather, this week our area has been about as far as you can get from the tropics.

Negus Tafar is visiting from Philadelphia, he said," It is horrible, I need to be closer to the Equator."

But this weekend folks from Pennsylvania and beyond are gathering at Split Rock Resort in Carbon County to heat things up by celebrating the Caribbean tradition of Carnival.

Conrad Randall, of Tobyhanna said, "What better thing to have in this freezing weather than to have a hot time like Carnival?"

Friday evening, the three-day festival was just getting started.

Guests enjoyed a flavorful feast, wore colorful masks, and of course there was joyful dancing.

Saturday's schedule includes family activities during the day and a live music blowout at night.

"It is nice to know that we didn't have to go to the Caribbean, the Carnival came to us, so it was nice to come here and make believe it is 90 degrees," said Carmen Bolden-Brown of Sciota.
