WILKES-BARRE — A former police chief from Luzerne County avoided going on trial Monday morning on theft charges by working out a deal with prosecutors.

Former West Wyoming Chief David Gashi agreed to pay almost $4,000 back to the borough and more than $14,000 to the police pension fund.

Prosecutors say if Gashi pays back the money within 30 days, the theft case against him will be dropped.

Authorities accused Gashi and another police chief in West Wyoming, Stanley Sipko, of receiving double paychecks between 2005 and 2009.

In October 2013, Sipko was ordered to enter rehab for a year and he can no longer be a police officer.
