HAZLETON -- It seemed no matter where you looked in our area there were machinery and crews attacking the piles of snow.  The problem, at Hazleton City Hall and other places, there is nowhere nearby to put it, so it was hauled away in trucks.

Because it's Presidents Day the Hazleton crews, including Tom Spishock, get double time and a half in pay.

"It's a lot of work, there's a lot of snow on the ground, you do the best you can do," Spishock said.

Hazleton's mayor said the cost of the snow removal could mean some spring street maintenance projects will be put on the back burner.

In nearby Hazle Township there are 130 miles of roads to be cleared. There is so much work that outside companies had to be hired. Township supervisor Bill Gallagher said the cost comes out of the township's budget.

"It's probably going to put a pretty big dent in it. We were able to finish last year with a good amount of money, about $500,000, at the end of the year, so I'm sure it's going to take about half of it right now to maintain what we're doing."

Tresckow in Carbon County seemed to be in a deep freeze, too. Banks Township supervisor Joe Clark said in January the supervisors refused to accept their pay checks.

"We decided to do that, especially what's going on weather wise."

Florence Lockwood of Banks Township said she's had it with the cold and snow.

"I don’t like this at all. I like the summer, I like the summer time.”

Some say nothing in life is free. A sign in West Hazleton was planted in a snow bank.  It reads “free snow.” Some said they think there will be many takers.
