MOUNT POCONO -- The Poconos are really being hit hard by this latest snow storm.

At times Mount Pocono was almost a white out Thursday morning.

Driving conditions were bad and it’s not only dangerous driving conditions that have emergency management officials concerned in Monroe County. It’s also the threat of power outages.

Couple the wind and the cold, and all of the snow is really starting to pile up in Mount Pocono with drifts of more than two feet in some places before lunchtime.   It’s a winter storm that put the brakes on FedEx drivers before sunrise.

“About two o’clock, looked around, couldn’t go anywhere,” said FedEx driver Norman Rivera.

The drivers were forced to park their rigs, shipments, and themselves at a Comfort Inn along Route 940.

“I was hoping to be leaving to go back home (to Indiana) this morning,” said FedEx driver Mark Wooden. “(Now I’m here) until tomorrow morning.”

The drivers went on to say that some of their coworkers at FedEx up and down the east coast are dealing with the same mess from Mother Nature.

“It’s bad all over the place,” Wooden said.

In nearby Stroudsburg, the weather tale is the same: plows trying to keep up with a relentless snow storm and the possibility of a foot or more.

Monroe County’s emergency management director Guy Miller says his team is preparing to handle a lot more than just the treacherous travel conditions.

“We expect some power issues possibly this afternoon into the evening, so again, generator safety, think carbon monoxide safety, all those things we ask people to be prepared for. It’s here, we need to activate those plans.”
