SCRANTON -- Officials released the names of a brother and sister killed in a crash in Scranton.
Investigators in Scranton are trying to find out what led up to the crash that killed the two teens Sunday night on the North Scranton Expressway.
Stephen Lebron, 14, and Fatima Lebron, 13, brother and sister, were killed after the crash. Both students at Northeast Intermediate in Scranton.
Scranton police officers were reconstructing that crash on the inbound lanes of the expressway. Inbound lanes were shut down for the investigation.
Police mapped the area near the Main Avenue on-ramp to figure out how the SUV lost control on the highway, then flipped onto the on-ramp.
Police say their mother, Shakara Lebron, was behind the wheel. Police believe she may have hydroplaned on a bridge before she lost control. But, investigators won't know for sure what led to the crash until they run tests on the SUV.
That situation makes it even more difficult for teachers and administrators at Northeast Intermediate School to explain the crash to Stephen and Fatima's classmates.
“We didn't know all the details. We still don't know all the details. obviously anytime you lose a student, it's devastating, and you're thinking about the effect it is going to have on the family and then the students they were friends with. The one student was an athlete, his teammates,” said Scranton School District Superintendent Bill King.
His teachers say Stephen Lebron was an outstanding basketball and football player. His coach Matt Fidoti met with other players after hearing the news, for what was a very difficult team meeting.
A group of school counselors was also on hand for other students.
“I just let them know that with time, it will heal, and I just let them know that I'm here for them if they need me,” Fidoti said.
Shakara Lebron is still in the hospital. Officials at Geisinger –CMC in Scranton say she is listed in serious condition.
Her boyfriend and 2-year-old daughter are expected to be OK.
The family attended Bethel AME Church. The pastor there has set up a memorial fund for the Lebron family. You can donate at any Penn Security Bank.
