PITTSTON -- Some doors and windows at city hall in Pittston are looking a lot shinier. They were replaced after a man shattered them while breaking into the building.
From far away it looks like a normal Monday at Pittston City Hall, but up close it’s clear something's wrong: a boarded up door after police say Max Deangelo of Blakeslee broke into the building over the weekend.
“We're lucky it happened when it did. It happened when there was not personnel in the building. There was not staff here. Public was not in the building, and the situation could have been much worse,” said city administrator Joe Moskovitz.
Pittston police say several officers noticed shattered doors and windows after they returned to the station inside city hall around 3 a.m. Sunday.
“We began to search the building, make sure there was no one inside. At that time, we found a male inside the city treasurer's office, hiding behind a desk,” said patrolman Sam DeSimone.
DeSimone says the man didn't talk or cooperate with them and appeared to be intoxicated.
“He actually became violent and starting kicking at officers.”
Both Officer DeSimone and Deangelo were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Police say Deangelo assaulted officers again at the hospital
City officials say the man who did this must have used the ashtray outside the building to do the damage because of how severe it is. This is going to cost several hundred dollars for the city to fix.
“The building was built in 1940 and it's the original glass, and it's hand painted, and we've tried to preserve the historical features of the building. That's one of the historical features that we had hoped to preserve,” said Moskovitz.
But instead of preserved it was shattered and replaced.
It's still unclear why Deangelo broke into city hall but officials say nothing was taken.
Deangelo is now locked up on charges including assault, burglary, and trespassing.
