TAMAQUA -- Family and friends are mourning the loss of a couple from Tamaqua who died in a crash in Lehigh County.

State police are investigating a wreck that claimed the lives of Roger and Geraldine Jones of Tamaqua.

Troopers say Roger was at the wheel on Route 309 near New Tripoli around 3 p.m. Wednesday when his pickup truck hit some slush and collided with another vehicle.

Those who knew the couple say they recently moved to Tamaqua and lived in an apartment building owned by their son.

Mike Sperlbaum lives upstairs from the crash victims and said he can't believe they're gone.

"To be honest it didn't sink in yet. We usually see her around and hear her around. She kept the building together that's what she did here. It’s a loss for sure. I guess I am still in shock. It didn't sink in."

Sperlbaum said Geraldine made him feel like her son.

"She could cook that was for sure. We always loved her leftovers. She would always beat on the door. We were an adoptive family to her."

We found Frank Tongue treating the sidewalk near where the couple lived. Tongue said he recently saw Geraldine.

"The plow had plowed her in and saw her out there shoveling so I went over there and I gave her a helping hand and I shoveled her out."

A Jones family spokesman says the couple was on their way home from the Allentown area when the crash occurred.
