HAZLETON – The fiancé of a man shot and killed outside a bar over the weekend told Newswatch 16 that he was trying to protect her during a scuffle.

Authorities said Garey Cox was shot in the head outside Shakers Bar on West Broad Street early Sunday morning, and he later died at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

According to prosecutors, Terrence Clarke is locked up on charges of homicide, aggravated assault, and carrying a weapon, despite a previous arrest.

Court records said another man, who was fighting with Clarke inside the bar and was later shot in the scuffle outside the bar, is recovering in the hospital.

Naya Wade told Newswatch 16 that she was walking to a waiting cab, when she was separated from Cox and later saw the shooting.

"He must not have heard me saying ‘baby, baby come on,’” said Wade. “I was yelling at him to come on because there was a lot of screaming and, a lot of yelling. Until he knows I am safe, he will not go no where at all. He wanted to make sure that I was out of harm’s way.”

Instead of planning for a wedding in May, Wade said she is now helping with funeral arrangements for the father of five children.

“Please, tell me that is not Garey. Just tell me that is not him. I’m walking over there and its him,” said Wade. “To really see the person who you`re supposed to be marrying three months from now, laying down on the ground with mad blood just on him, around him, and blood leaking from his head.”

Wade told Newswatch 16 that she isn’t sure that police have the right men, but prosecutors said they have plenty of evidence against Clarke.
