Cold Creating Great Ice Fishing Conditions

LACKAWANNA STATE PARK -- All the bitter cold has actually had one benefit: plenty of ice on lakes and ponds for ice fishing.

But on the lake at Lackawanna State Park on Monday, we found some fisherman who said some of these single digit days have even been too cold even for them.

The lake at Lackawanna State Park was dotted with ice fishermen.  While some people are tired of the cold the guys out on the ice are embracing it.

"I love it. I like to be out here. I think we do more ice fishing then we do in the warm weather,” said Joe Warren of Hanover Township.

"Just to get out, it's something to do, it kills the cabin fever."

Nick Carbonaro of Mountain Top pulled in a bluegill while we were there. He and his buddy Joe Warren have been ice fishing together for years. But now, the days in the single digits are too cold for them.

"Actually we've been waiting for it to hit like 30, which it did this morning, but now it looks like it's on its way back down,” Carbonaro said.

"It's just got to point when we've gotten more mature. When it gets too cold we just get back in the truck and go home,” Warren added.

Some of the guys aren't messing around with the bitter cold winds.  They have a tent set up and even a heater going inside.  It's a little too cold to be right out in the elements.

"Yeah, I don't know how these guys do it without one."

Fred Mislevy of Tunkhannock and Glen White of Clarks Summit were gathering up all their fish after a successful day. They know some years there's not enough ice all season. They'll take the cold.

"Oh, it's nice,” Mislevy said. “You get out here and it just wakes you up!"

"We love to get out here for a few hours, it's relaxing, it's invigorating, we love it,” White added.

So does Joe Slusark of Avoca.  His clothes act as his tent. He bundles up and is out on the ice no matter how cold it gets.

"I don't mind it, I don't mind it at all.  I always say it's a day at the beach."
