PRICE TOWNSHIP -- The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is one of the busiest times for ski areas in the Poconos.

The holiday means an extra day of business for one ski area that's only open for the weekend.

For one family, having a day off from school for Martin Luther King Jr. Day means a day on the slopes at Alpine Mountain Ski Area near Canadensis.

“I'm just excited,” said Dalina Lehman of Cresco.

14 year-old Dalina says she couldn't be happier to have the day off and spend it with her family, especially at Alpine Mountain, where she first learned how to ski.

So did 10 year-old Gabriella Danatzko.

"I love feeling the breeze going up my face," said Danatzko.

Alpine Mountain Ski Area is usually closed on Monday and only open Friday night to Sunday. But this holiday means a boost in business for a ski area that caters to families.

"We get to do a lot more customer service. A lot of the people we get to know by their first names," said Brian Hewlings of Alpine Mountain Ski Area.

Alpine Mountain Ski Area is one of the smaller ski areas in the Poconos. But for families come out to the ski area, that's one of the most appealing things about it.

"I like Alpine because it's perfectly small. Whenever I'm lost, I can usually look down by the lodge and find my mom," said Danatzko.

That's a good thing for mom, Carol Lehman, who likes not having to compete with crowds of people.

"It's more family oriented. It's about the little ones learning how to ski. You don't have to worry about the older ones knocking them over or being afraid of being knocked over or run over," said Lehman.
