HAZLETON -- Penn State Hazleton hosted some events to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The guest speaker was an author who wrote a book about black students who needed help from the army to attend a segregated high school down south in the 1950s.
“Without the army, we would have perished, I am quite sure and they were there the entire year. Some people think they came in and settled folk down and left but no, they had to stay the entire year,” explained civil rights activist Terrence Roberts.
Roberts was one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who, in 1957, were the first black students ever to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
