KINGSTON -- Several churches in Luzerne County came together Sunday afternoon for a special ceremony involving the Susquehanna River.

Members of Byzantine Catholic Churches performed a blessing of the Susquehanna River at Nesbitt Park.

Organizers said they hold the event each year because the river is such a key part of the Wyoming Valley and northeastern Pennsylvania.

"Here in the Wyoming Valley we always watch very carefully over the levels of the river and we really want the river to be a source of life and nothing else.  So every year at this time we do ask god's blessing for the river.  That it could be something served for the good of all of us," said Father James Hayer.

This is the 11th year for the blessing in Luzerne County.
