Snow Forces Flight Delays, Cancellations

PITTSTON TOWNSHIP -- The snow here and around the country made it especially difficult for travelers, many of them still trying to get home after the holidays.

Most flights in and out of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport were cancelled or delayed.

Only one flight left the airport Friday morning.  That was a 7 a.m. flight to Charlotte.

The airport expected most of the afternoon flights to be on time but as the day went on, that wasn’t the case.

Very few people went through security throughout the day at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. That's because most of them were waiting at the long check-in line as more and more flights were delayed and cancelled.

"I was looking forward to being greeted by 80 degree weather by early this evening,” said Julie Schwering of San Diego.

There's a good chance that won't happen since Schwering's connecting flight to Charlotte was cancelled.

"I called my sister. I said ‘come back and get me.’ I'm going to see what I can do from there."

Heather Welsh and her husband spent some time in line trying to coordinate flights after hearing theirs was delayed almost five hours.

“We checked this morning, and it said only half an hour, so we figured we'd be fine. It was kind of a shock to get here and find out it's delayed that late,” Welsh said.

But because many of the flights were dependent on other airports and the weather, it was difficult for airport employees to re-book travelers.

“It's been a hectic morning for us to try to stay ahead of this storm. We've had crews working through the entire night,” said airport manager Barry Centini.

And now more than ever, travelers say they're ready to take off

“Definitely freezing, a lot of wind. That's why I'm glad we're going to Florida so we'll be a lot warmer,” Welsh said.

Most flights throughout the evening are expected to be on time with the exception of a few delays and cancellations to and from the Philadelphia airport.
