ELK MOUNTAIN -- Skiers at Elk Mountain layered up and braved the cold temperatures for some winter fun.
For Madison Levinson of Waverly, she says her trip here is refreshing.
"It’s good to be outside and getting some air because in the winter it’s easy to stay inside but to get outside it really refreshes you,” said Levinson.
Levinson stepped out into the single degree temperatures prepared, wearing two pairs of pants, a sweater, a few coats, "two pairs of gloves, a face mask, a hat, and a helmet that has insulation,” she said.
"It’s very cold with the wind. On the lift, it’s not so bad but once you start moving fast, it’s cold," said Anne Shutter of Lebanon.
Layers were key to enjoying the slopes with temperatures in the single digits.
Ski Patrol director Bob Bluff says the workers are also taking precaution, taking more breaks and staying alert for signs of frostbite.
"Keep an eye on the guests especially when they’re in the lift line to watch their cheeks and their exposed skin," said Bluff.
Because of the extreme cold and wind at Elk Mountain, the ski slopes will be closing a little early but many skiers say they’ll be sticking it out until the end.
“This isn’t bad for me. I’ve been on trips out west, it was minus 40, so not bad," said Carl Karnich of Cornwall.
Karnich came on a ski trip with others from Lebanon, Pennsylvania. They are paying attention to the frostbite warnings, but enjoying their trip nonetheless.
After only a few runs, many skiers made their way indoors looking for relief and, "something warm. We were freezing out there. It burns your face. That’s the only thing that really bothers me, at least is my face," said James Fruehan of Clarks Summit.
The slopes on Elk Mountain closed at 4:30 p.m. due to the extreme cold and wind and will re-open for the weekend.
