NUANGOLA -- They are racing the clock; a lot of people are on the road and in the air, hoping to make it to their destinations by the time the new year arrives.
We spoke with travelers passing through Luzerne County this morning.
It wasn’t your average morning commute. Many of the people behind the wheel and in the passenger’s seat are on a mission: make it somewhere special before 2014 arrives.
Martin Huard was traveling from Montreal to Orlando, Florida. That's where he'll meet up with his girlfriend, and with any luck, it will happen before midnight.
“Hopefully, I'm going to make it in time. I'm going to take a small nap and after that, I'm going to go straight ahead to Florida,” Huard said.
We met Huard at the Interstate 81 rest area, near Nuangola in Luzerne County.
Clark Walsh of Scranton is flying home to Vail, Colorado. He was on an early morning flight, out of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. For Walsh, the start of the new year means the end of Christmas vacation with family in Scranton. Walsh wants to get home by midnight.
“I got a little party with some friends and that's about it,” Walsh said.
Walsh has another reason to make it home on time. He has to be back work, in the food distribution business, tomorrow.
No matter what form of transportation you are using, there is one simple goal everyone has in mind. And that is to be home, or at your scheduled event, before the ball drops, above Times Square.
Ralph Fecteau is driving from Maine to Florida. He knows he'll be on the road when the clock strikes 12:00.
“It's kind of an adventure. We'll pull over early and celebrate,” he said. “It doesn't matter.”
What does matter: buckle up, drive safely, and Happy New Year.
