BEAVERTOWN --The borough of Beavertown in Snyder County has lost its mayor. Cloyd "Bill" Wagner, 83, died Monday.

Relatives said he was recently diagnosed with liver cancer.

"He was a well-liked person and he did a lot for the community. He did a lot of things, he was in charge of the historical society," said his second cousin Faye Moyer.

For almost a quarter century, Wagner was mayor of Beavertown.

He was editor of The Beavertown News and head of the Beavertown Historical Society.

In 2012, he helped his community come in third place in a Reader's Digest contest featuring the spirit of small communities.

"Beavertown was everything to him, I'd say. He did everything he could for the town as mayor and even before he was mayor," said friend Paul Saylor of Beavertown.

Mayor Wagner died with just one day left in his term. The new year brings a newly elected mayor to Beavertown and he said he knows he has big shoes to fill.

"He served the community very well and I hope I can do the same in the coming years," said Mayor-elect Lee Hollenbach of Beavertown.

Wagner was a Korean War veteran and will be buried with full military honors in Beavertown on Saturday.
