SHENANDOAH -- Firefighters were called out Tuesday morning to a fire in Shenandoah.
It started around 10 a.m. at a home in the 100 block of Grant Street.
Pictures submitted to PhotoLink show flames shooting from the first floor windows.
Neighbors said it started in a vacant home and spread to other rowhomes.
Fire crews in Shenandoah said the blaze was intense. Flames shot from the windows of an empty home on South Grant Street.
Investigators say the fire quickly spread to three other row homes.
A nearby car now serves as a temporary home for a family, victims of the fire.
“Everything that’s in the house and we're out here freezing,” said fire victim Audrey Oswald. “We don't have any idea where we're going.”
“I just wonder if I can salvage anything out of there, if it's water-damaged, smoked-damaged,” said fire victim Mike Silks.
Tyler, age 8, lost all his Christmas presents but something he loves made it out OK.
“I got my pets out, too. My kitten is in the car.”
Firefighters from all over Schuylkill County were there to fight this blaze and some were pretty beat.
Despite that, firefighters are credited with saving Deb Franz’s pet dog Simba and the World War II medals of her father, who was a prisoner of war. Other things were lost.
“I don't even know. I can't even think straight, to tell you the truth, I basically lost a lot of memorabilia from my parents. It was all on the second floor and the second floor is basically gone,” Franz said.
As fire investigators look for a cause, three families will spend New Year’s in hotel rooms from the Red Cross or with family.
