SWEET VALLEY -- A family's dog was killed in a destructive fire early Christmas Eve morning in Luzerne County.

The family lost everything, escaping with the clothes on their backs and nothing else.

It happened around 4 a.m. along Bloomingdale Road in Ross Township. A mobile home went up in flames.

“We got the call around 4 a.m. for a fully involved structure fire and that's what we found when we got here on the scene,” said Sweet Valley Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Stan Davis.

Five people lived there.  Four were inside.  They all got out safely.

In spite of firefighters’ best efforts, the home, and everything inside, including the family dog, was lost.  Most of the home burned to the ground, with only parts of walls left standing.

Assistant Chief Davis tells us that even though the Red Cross is helping the family, the community is stepping up to do what it can.

“I know there's going to be a clothing drive that's going to be put on to help them because they lost everything they own in the fire.”

The drive will be at the Sweet Valley Volunteer Fire Department on Main Road.  They need clothing for two adults; a man and a woman , an 19-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old boy. The drive runs from 6 – 7:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
