MOUNTAIN TOP -- Some roads turned into skating rinks Monday morning, making for a tricky early morning commute.

PennDOT salt trucks were making their way up and down Route 309 in the Mountain Top area of Luzerne County, a welcome sight to drivers.

Several miles away, in White Haven, even walking was a major chore.   Ask Matilda Decroti on her way to the market.

“I have to do some food shopping.  If I don't do it, it ain't going to get done.”

Guys like Nick Positano help make Decroti's trip possible.  We often hear about people rushing to the store, before or during storms, to stock up on the basics.  Positano delivers the bread.

“I feel great.  I'm happy to be here,” he said.

Positano says his day was actually better than expected.  He didn't have any problems getting his bread truck to the market in White Haven.

The rain froze when it hit the ground, creating a thick layer of ice, and there's only one thing that can really combat that: rock salt and a lot of it.

Larry Kresge was behind the wheel of a salt truck.

“You just can't drive on it.  It's impossible, even in four wheel.  It's very hard on ice.”

Kresge says he has contracts to plow and salt 11 parking lots, and he'll likely go through 12 tons of salt before the day is through.

Of course, there are some things that can't be salted such as trees along Route 437 between Mountain Top and White Haven.  They were bending under the weight of the ice, just waiting for a warm up to "spring" back in shape.
