HONESDALE -- As a parent, how would you feel if you were faced with this choice: either spend your money on food for the kids or spend it on Christmas gifts because you can't afford both.

At the warehouse for the Wayne-Pike counties Toys for Tots operation near Honesdale, there are several rooms filled with things kids will love to unwrap.

But don't let all of it fool you. There are age groups that are in desperate need of donations.

Just ask Shari Tirado who said the organization is only about one-third of the way to its goal.

"We have over 200 infants we have to service at this point and we definitely do not have enough toys to meet that demand at all," said Tirado.

Tirado said toys for teen boys and girls have also been slow to come in. With only three weeks left until Christmas she said the campaign lost a week to a late Thanksgiving holiday.

"A week to us could be a thousand toys, to lose that it's a huge deal, we're trying to make a public appeal to please help us out."

Wayne County Ford is one of the many local businesses doing its part to collect toys. The dealership along Route 6 near Honesdale wraps up its "Stuff the Truck" event December 13.

"Things seem to be a little down this year in terms of what we have seen in the past with the toy drive," said General Sales Manager Josh Hafler.

"With the food stamp cuts now, you have families that are debating do I go buy stuff for Christmas or do i go buy food?" said Tirado.

The Toys for Tots campaign wraps up at many locations in two weeks.
