NANTICOKE – Business owners and residents have donated more than $3,000 into a reward fund, as city and state police try to track down the person who killed a great-grandmother on Thanksgiving night.

One person who lives near the crime scene on East Grand Street told Newswatch 16 that he is too worried about his family’s safety to talk on camera, but he and other older neighbors are terrified after the home invasion and killing last week.

“We never thought we’d ever put a security system in our house, but we did. It was one of the best things we ever did,” the man said.

Volunteers at the Charles T. Adams Senior Center in Wilkes-Barre said Gertrude Price enjoyed taking the bus to Public Square, to go shopping and to visit with friends.

“I didn’t know she was murdered. I mean that`s a shame. You`re not safe nowhere, you have got to be very, very careful who you talk to,” said Patricia Gowan.

Friends said the 97-year-old was independent, that she still mowed her own grass and shoveled snow.

"I almost hope that it was drug related, the fact that the person wasn`t in the right mind when they did it,” said Frank Catina. “I`d hate to think that someone was just calm and cool and collected could be that evil.”

Troopers said that detectives are following up on leads and that authorities are taking anonymous tips at the Wyoming State Police barracks at 570-697-2000.

The Nanticoke Fraternal Order of Eagles established a reward fund that will be given to the tipster that leads police to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the homicide of Gertrude Price.

Donations to the “FOE Just Rewards” fund can be dropped off at any PNC Bank location.
