BRODHEADSVILLE -- The cold weather was good news for the thousands of hunters heading into the woods for the start of rifle deer season.

We found several hunters picking up some last minute supplies Sunday at Dunkelberger's Sports Outfitter on Route 209 in Brodheadsville.

Some of the in demand items included ammunition and hand warmers.

Workers say they've seen an increase in the number of first time hunters this season.

“Biggest thing is trying to get the youth out.  The youth mentor program's really picking up.  So we're getting kids out before the age of 12 with a supervised adult and it’s very beneficial to the industry,” said Mike Gnall.

Rifle deer season runs through December 14.
