SUNBURY — Volunteers in Sunbury are preparing to serve more than 600 people at a free community Thanksgiving dinner. Organizers say they’ve spent the week cooking 40 turkeys and 40 hams!
Volunteers spent the morning carrying boxes of food, styrofoam containers and clothing into the Special Occasions Banquet Hall on South Second Street in Sunbury.
Rhonda Fisher and dozens of volunteers are getting ready for their 14th annual free Thanksgiving event. It’s for anyone who shows up.
“Last year I’m so blessed to say we served about 600 meals last year,” Fisher said.
The event starts at 7 a.m. Thanksgiving morning with a continental breakfast. The group will also deliver meals to shut-ins.
“And then at 12:00 I have everyone back in here for a devotional and the noon blessing and we start serving in-house,” Fisher said.
Fisher says volunteers prepared 40 turkeys and 40 hams during the week, along with mounds of stuffing, desserts and all the trimmings. Volunteers spent the day setting up.
“I’ve been wanting to for years and now I just retired so I have time and I just wanted to volunteer,” Kenn Napp said.
“It takes so much time, hours and hours. Getting people to donate, and her running around,” Michele Lash said.
Fisher says the event is made possible through donations from the community.
The event is not just a free Thanksgiving dinner. It is also a clothing drive. People can come and get a free coat or some toys.
“Each child that comes gets to go home with a teddy bear and a bible,” Fisher said.
Fisher says there will also be bingo and door prizes throughout the day. It all starts at 7a.m. at Special Occasions Banquet Hall in Sunbury.
