SCRANTON – We got our first look Monday morning at former State Senator Bob Mellow since he went to Federal Prison last January on corruption charges.

The former State Senator has called St. James Manor on Wyoming Avenue in Scranton his home for the past two weeks.

And that is where Mellow is expected to stay until he is scheduled to be released on March 15, 2014.

We caught up with Mellow Monday morning, as he left St. James Manor to catch a ride to his job. But he would not say where he is working.

Mellow is serving the final months of a 16 month federal sentence in Scranton, after returning from a federal lockup in Georgia.

He pleaded guilty last year after being charged with using taxpayer-paid staffers to do political campaign work, and for filing a false tax return.

At his sentencing last year, Mellow’s lawyer asked for leniency, claiming the former State Senator had a heart condition.  He told Action 16 Investigative Reporter Dave Bohman his health is “fine,” and did not answer any other questions.

Mellow also faces state charges of taking part in a Turnpike bid rigging scandal.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office claims Mellow took part in the scheme by improperly using his influence to steer construction bond work for Turnpike construction projects to a specific bank.

Mellow has pleaded not guilty and the case is scheduled to have a court hearing on those charges in Harrisburg in January.
