KULPMONT — A house destroyed by fire almost ten months ago is finally being cleaned up in Kulpmont. Demolition crews spent the day cleaning up this pile of rubble on Chestnut Street.
The debris used to be a house, but in January, fire destroyed it. It’s remained untouched ever since, until now.
Just last week, the homeowner finally signed over the property to Kulpmont borough. In exchange, the borough eliminated fines and citations against him. Community leaders wasted no time getting rid of the rubble, which is a relief to the people who live by it.
“I didn’t know what to expect as far as what kind of varmints were underneath there or whatever,” Bernie Varano said.
“I’m glad they got ride of it. I don’t have to worry about wild animals and kids getting in there. They get in there and take bottles and smash them in the alleyway where my car is,” Jason Schera said.
Neighbors are not the only ones happy the debris is being removed. J.P. Jacoby is the store manager at Shimock’s Furniture and says anything will look better than that did next to his store.
“It’s been an eyesore for the community for ten months and our customers come in and ask about it. It’s just nice for the neighborhood to be cleaned up,” Jacoby said.
Since Kulpmont borough now owns the property, it’s up to council to decide what to do with the land next. No decision has been made.
