HOMETOWN -- A woman got quite a surprise Thursday in Schuylkill County: a party for her 80th birthday.
It was more than just that, it was a big thank you, too.
The surprise birthday party in Hometown was thrown for Jean Machamer. Jean is 80. But the celebration had a different twist. She's stepping down as president of the Tamaqua Senior Citizens group to spend more time with her family and the winter in Florida. Jean said over the last four years she was able to double the number of seniors participating in various activities.
Jean addressed the standing room only crowd.
"I feel that you're all my kids and I have to take care of all of you."
Phil Price, a friend, said Jean has done a lot for the organization.
"Gets along and is well organized. Once she wants to do something and is well prepared for whatever she does."
The surprise party was organized by son Dave Williams and daughter Debbie Brennan.
"She was very surprised. She had weak legs and had to sit down and cried for a while before she could move around," Brennan said.
Jean Machamer explained that many members of her family lived into their 90s. Jean predicts she'll make 100.
