Catholic bishops in the U.S. honored a man who grew up in Schuylkill County.
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville has been elected as the head of American bishops’ conference.
Archbishop Kurtz was born in Mahanoy City and earned a master’s degree in social work from Marywood University.
He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Allentown in 1972 and served there for 27 years, before becoming bishop of Knoxville and eventually archbishop of Louisville.
Archbishop Kurtz will serve as the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for the next three years. He succeeds Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York.
