SCRANTON -- Thousands of American flags lined the commons at Marywood University in Lackawanna County Monday as part of a Veterans Day tribute.
More than 6,700 American flags, carefully placed along the Marywood University commons, represent fallen solider from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Many local vets gathered with students and the community to take in this big display of patriotism, and honor those who have given their all for our country's sake.
Army veteran Thomas Carlucci served during Operation Iraqi Freedom and says the sight at Marywood University, “brings a tear to my eye, of course, because I know of all the veterans that died in all the wars."
For World War II veteran Jack Roche of Scranton, it brings back memories of buddies left behind.
"It’s amazing how many flags there are for what they mean."
Written messages of love and support were also scattered across the wall of remembrance inside Marywood University encouraging people to be interactive this Veterans Day in showing their support.
For coordinator Lauren Williams, this show of patriotism is a labor of love.
"It’s a very, very small price to pay for the sacrifices that they have made for us, so if we can do something like this which is very small in the scheme of everything they’ve done for us, it’s just to bring recognition to their service and to thank them for it."
People from the very young to the young at heart watched as the color guard saluted the thousands of flags on display.
Lily Kochis of Dunmore stopped by to honor a vet she loves very much.
"My great-grandpa,” she said. “He got a Purple Heart medal."
Even at the age of 7, she says she understands just how very important this day is and will be in the years to come.
"Because of all the veterans fighting for us, they did a pretty hard job."
If you would still like to see American flags in person, Marywood University says the display will be left on the commons through Tuesday.
