TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP -- Newswatch 16 has learned a police chief in the Poconos had a gun stolen from his police vehicle months ago and the weapon is still missing.
Court papers show the gun was stolen from Pocono Mountain Regional Police Chief Harry Lewis’s work vehicle while it was parked outside his house.
Members of the Pocono Mountain Police Commission left the police department quickly without much to say.
One member said the commission had an executive session on personnel issues and that Police Chief Harry Lewis would be at the station in the morning.
Commission members would not go into detail about the meeting, but it comes as authorities investigate the theft of Chief Lewis' gun.
Court papers show that back in May, thieves broke into Chief Lewis’s work vehicle at his home near Allentown. The alleged thieves stole his wallet, credit cards and a firearm.
By tracking the use of those credit cards, police arrested two men who admitted to breaking into the vehicle. Police said they confessed to selling Chief Lewis’s gun in Allentown shortly after they stole it.
The firearm is still missing.
Newswatch 16 tried to speak with Chief Lewis at the department but was told he wasn’t there.
Speaking to him by phone, Chief Lewis said he is not off the job but would not say if his absence was related to the gun theft.
