A steady stream of voters cast their ballots at Sunbury Community Hospital. Many people say several countywide races brought them to the polls.

“There is a lot of animosity here because of all the things that have been happening in the county,” Beth Kremer said.

Recently, Northumberland County commissioners cut the salaries of several row officers, including Coroner Jim Kelley and Register and Recorder Mary Zimmerman.

Several of the row officers filed a lawsuit against the commissioners to fight the cuts. Two of the commissioners responded by urging people to vote those row officers out of office. Dave Butler of Shamokin says that made him want to vote even more!

“Really, he persuaded me to put a big exclamation point on my vote. The commissioners? Yes, absolutely,” Butler said.

“I think a person should have the right to vote for whoever they want to vote for,” Margaret Shelley said.

“I don’t think anybody should tell anyone who to vote for or who not to vote for. That’s their right,” Lois Kashner said.

Election officials here in Northumberland County say so far voter turnout has been pretty good for a non-presidential election year. They believe that has something to do with people wanting to vote for row offices.

“I kind-of study what’s going on and try to keep in touch with what’s happening. Then I make my decision and then i vote,” Ted Andrewlevich said.

Four row offices are on the ballot: coroner, prothonotary, controller and register and recorder.
