SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Police in Lackawanna County are still trying to figure out what led a nurse to shoot her patient and then herself.

They were both found dead last night in a nursing home near Clarks Summit.

South Abington Township police say that nurse Aimee Larkin, 42, from Dunmore, has worked at Abington Manor since 2011. They say she shot a resident, Howard Kinney, 79, in the chest and then shot herself Monday night.

Now, police are trying to figure out why this happened and the relationship nurse and patient may have had.

Investigation Into Nursing Home Murder Suicide Continuing

Police say the suspected shooter was licensed practical nurse Aimee Larkin of Dunmore. What police can't figure out is a motive.

Larkin's coworkers said they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, and a search of Larkin's home and car didn't turn up any clues either. They're also trying to figure out if the gun they think Larkin took into Abington Manor belonged to her.

Police don't know about the relationship between Larkin and Kinney or the mindset she may have had Monday night.

One clue may be Larkin's last Facebook post where she said she felt like an "unappreciated nurse.”

Officials with Abington Manor wouldn't comment on the relationship between Larkin and Kinney.

They released this statement:

“We are fully cooperating with law enforcement officials at this time and are hopeful that their efforts will help us to understand this tragedy.  This is a challenging and emotional time for all of us.”

We spoke with family members of victim Howard Kinney, who told us he moved closer to family in Wyoming County several years ago and then became a resident at Abington Manor about two years ago. They said they had no idea why this may have happened.
