PIKE COUNTY -- A major project to rebuild Interstate 84 between Milford and Matamoras started Tuesday in Pike County.

On Tuesday crews began milling the interstate and clearing away debris to make crossovers.

"It needs major repairs. It's bumpy, you feel it," Dennis Donegan of Newfoundland said.

Drivers who travel on Interstate 84 through Pike County can expect to see some big changes over the next couple of years.

The project to rebuild the road between Milford and Matamoras will cost more than $66 million.

Newswatch 16 was there as crews began milling the road near the Matamoras exit, by the New York border.

This is the first step before workers can begin tearing apart the interstate.

"I can see that they need the construction, that they're doing it because it's kind of rough. They need to pave it better," Ann McClain of Indiana said.

Interstate 84 in Pike County was constructed in the 1970's. PennDOT officials said the pavement used then has deteriorated over the years.

Newswatch 16 met up with truck driver Ken Breun in Newfoundland, who said Interstate 84 needs some major upgrades.

"The worst stretch is like from the river up to about here. That's about the worst stretch of 84," Breun said.

PennDOT officials said over the course of the project drivers shouldn't expect too much congestion on Interstate 84.

Drivers should expect to see lane restrictions on both east and westbound lanes between Milford and Matamoras over the next couple of weeks

PennDOT officials said crews are starting to make cross overs on Interstate 84.

Once they're done doing that in the spring all traffic will be moved to the eastbound lanes while the westbound lanes are removed and replaced.

All traffic will then be moved to the westbound lanes while the eastbound lanes are being worked on.

Tow truck driver Dennis Donegan said he's not concerned about the delays. He's just happy work is being done.

"I'm not concerned about the delays. I'm happy that they're fixing the road. It makes it a lot better for us," Donegan said.
