JIM THORPE - State police in Carbon County said a deputy sheriff died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday night.

According to the Lehigh County Coroner, it was David Midas, 33, of Weatherly.

Authorities said the incident happened on Broadway in Jim Thorpe around 8:20 p.m.

The Lansford Police Chief told Newswatch 16 that an off-duty officer and an on-duty officer were involved in the incident, Midas being one of them.

Troopers said that there are no suspicious circumstances and the death has been ruled a suicide.

The street was blocked off for hours, during the busy fall weekend in Jim Thorpe.

On Saturday in Lansford, residents told Newswatch 16 that both Midas, and the other officer involved Chris Ondrus, were popular in the community and well-respected.

Michael Erdock met Officer Midas during a visit to the Lansford station house.

"Oh he was nice, he was very pleasant, actually he was known to be a very diplomatic person, he had a very nice nature," Erdock said.
