HEMLOCK TOWNSHIP -- Forget the turkey, stuffing, and all the trimmings; you can now spend Thanksgiving night shopping at several retailers.
The Bon-Ton and other major retailers announced this week that they're open for business at 8 p.m.
We talked with shoppers and retail employees in Columbia County about what seems to be a new Thanksgiving tradition.
More stores than ever are announcing they'll be open for business Thanksgiving night.
First it was Macy's, then JCPenney, Kohl's, and the latest major retailer to break the news, The Bon-Ton.
Mollie and Bill Harrell of Espy have been shopping at the Columbia Mall for decades and say with the tough economy, opening early might not be a bad idea.
"Well, it just, I think, gives them a head start for Christmas shopping," Mollie Harrell said.
But many shoppers in Columbia County say they've had enough.
Mary Ann Hickman of Fairmount Township says she'll be spending the holiday with her grandkids, and fears many are putting shopping before their families.
"Trying to get out and buy, buy, buy, when there's enough days during the week and there's enough time before the holidays."
Last year, other stores like Toys R Us, Walmart, Sears and Target already were talking turkey opening at 8 and 9 p.m.
With stores like JCPenney, Kohl's, Macy's and more announcing they'll be open on Thanksgiving Day, there's now a petition started online urging customers not to shop.
The Facebook page Say No to Shopping on Thanksgiving has about 13,000 likes, about a month away from the big day.
But Columbia Mall retail worker Krista Gearhart says she doubts that will have any impact. She says opening early is a lose-lose proposition.
"You want the best customer service and then you wonder on Thanksgiving why the person behind the desk isn't as chipper as possible, it's because they just took time out of their family."
But no matter how many stores are open, some shoppers, like Jason Williams of Bloomsburg, will be staying home.
"The sale can wait," he said.
For anyone counting, there are 62 more shopping days left until Christmas.
